Become a Tutor

Thank you for your interest in working at the Math Learning Center as a student tutor or assistant!

Responsibilities

MLC tutors help other students develop mathematical thinking and practice various problem solving techniques from mathematics and statistics courses ranging up to MATH 228 or STAT 305. This can include facilitating one-on-one and group tutoring interactions in either in-person or virtual formats. In addition, tutors must be able to work in a team setting; collaborating with other tutors on working with students and on other tasks or projects that are necessary to facilitate and improve the day-to-day operations of the MLC.

Requirements

Here are the primary requirements to be considered for a tutoring position:

  • Applicants must be recommended by a faculty member who can attest to the applicant's mathematical ability
  • Applicants must have completed up to MATH 114 Calc II for Biology & Life Sci or MATH 116 Calculus II with course grade in the high B/A range
  • Applicants must have and are required to maintain a GPA of at least 3.0

Recommendation; in order to be effective as a tutor, students must be able to demonstrate personal success in academics, particularly in MATH & STAT courses. To this end, to be considered for our tutoring positions, you must have a recommendation on file with the Office of Academic Success from a faculty member who can attest to your mathematical skills and knowledge. This recommendation can be submitted through the OAS faculty referral form. If a faculty member needs access to the form, they should email [email protected].

Coursework; since we are supporting UM-Dearborn students who are taking math and statistics class at UM-Dearborn, it is highly preferred that tutors have past or on-going experience taking MATH and STAT courses at UM-Dearborn.
