The Armenian Research Center (ARC) houses resources on all things Armenian.

ARC Mission and Goals

ARC's primary mission is to serve students, the academic community and the public, both in the U.S. and worldwide, by facilitating research and publications on all aspects of Armenian history, society and culture.

The ARC

  • adds a multicultural and international perspective to the educational process on and off campus;
  • aims to help students better understand the world and define their proper role in it;
  • provides the metro Detroit community, and particularly the Armenian-Americans, with valuable learning resources, educational materials, outreach programs, and helps to serve local cultural needs;
  • supports innovative research in Armenian Studies by providing classesscholarshipsresources and publication opportunities to students and scholars both nationally and internationally;
  • organizes Armenian Studies conferences and exhibitions to advance its mission to serve the academic community in the U.S. and worldwide.

The fall of the Bagratuni kingdom of Armenia in 1045 triggered massive emigration from Greater Armenia. Besides Armenian noblemen, merchants and artisans were also among the migrants, looking for new horizons in Cilicia to pursue their endeavors.

Dr. Gevorgyan's talk will focus on the Armenian principality of Cilicia, founded in 1080, which became a kingdom in 1198. Focusing on trade and other issues, he will discuss how Armenians maintained a state of Cilicia for 300 years in a region that was continuously contested among competing empires.

About Dr. Gevorgyan

Dr. Zohrab Gevorgyan is a historian of the Middle Ages and a specialist in history pedagogy. He is a senior research at the Institute of History at the Armenian National Academy of Sciences and adjust lecturer at the American University of Armenia. his numerous publications include a monograph titled The Armenian State of Cilicia in the Mediterranean Trad System (13-14th centuries) [in Armenian, Yerevan, 2015]. Dr. Gevorgyan is currently a Fulbright scholar at the Promise Armenian Institute of the University of California, Los Angeles.

Michigan Public's "Stateside" featured a discussion on the findings of the Armenian Diaspora Survey in Michigan with Dr. Vahe Sahakyan from the Armenian Research Center and Dr. Inna Mirzoyan from the Department of Sociology, Wayne State University.

Free visitor parking is available on the parking lot across from entrance to the FCN. Visitor parking is marked on the campus map by VP.
